Dwelling lighting plan playbook

Goal

Plan required lighting outlets and switches for a dwelling unit layout.

Inputs you must know before you start

  • Room list, dimensions, and egress paths.
  • Door swings and circulation routes.
  • Fixture types and installation constraints.

The path (in order)

  1. Identify required rooms and areas for lighting outlets.
  2. Place required lighting outlets by room and corridor.
  3. Assign switch locations for required control points.
  4. Verify switch accessibility and conductor requirements.
  5. Document the plan for inspection review.

This is

A room-by-room checklist to ensure required lighting outlets and switching locations are provided.

This is not

A full lighting design or energy code compliance plan.

Inspection-ready checklist

  • Required lighting outlets placed by room and area.
  • Switch locations meet accessibility requirements.
  • Stairs and hallways have required switching.
  • Plan reflects actual layout and door swings.

Worked example
