Receptacle layout playbook

Goal

Lay out receptacles to meet spacing requirements and ensure required protection is applied for each location.

Inputs you must know before you start

  • Room dimensions and wall space definitions.
  • Countertop lengths and island/peninsula features.
  • Protection requirements (GFCI/AFCI) for each location.
  • Circuit plan and load allocation.

The path (in order)

  1. Identify all wall spaces and required receptacle areas.
  2. Apply spacing rules to place receptacles along walls.
  3. Add required countertop, island, and peninsula receptacles.
  4. Assign circuits and verify GFCI/AFCI protection needs.
  5. Review the layout for clearance, accessibility, and inspection notes.

This is

A room-by-room checklist to place receptacles correctly and coordinate protection requirements.

This is not

A complete circuit design for all dwelling loads or specialty occupancies.

Inspection-ready checklist

  • All required wall spaces have receptacles within spacing limits.
  • Countertop and special locations included.
  • GFCI/AFCI requirements mapped to each outlet.
  • Circuit assignments documented for plan review.

Worked example

A kitchen and living area are reviewed for required wall and countertop receptacles. Spacing is applied along walls, countertop outlets are added, and GFCI/AFCI protection is mapped to the circuit schedule.
