Panel labeling playbook

Goal

Create clear, accurate panel directories that match as-built conditions.

Inputs you must know before you start

  • Final circuit assignments and loads.
  • Panelboard type and directory format.
  • Owner or AHJ labeling expectations.

The path (in order)

  1. Verify each circuit's served area or load.
  2. Write specific, readable descriptions.
  3. Mark spares and future spaces clearly.
  4. Review the directory against as-built conditions.

This is

A quick checklist for accurate and compliant panel directories.

This is not

A full arc flash labeling or equipment signage plan.

Inspection-ready checklist

  • Circuit descriptions are specific and accurate.
  • Spares and future spaces labeled.
  • Directory matches as-built circuits.

Worked example

A lighting panel is labeled with room-specific descriptions, spares are marked, and the directory is reviewed against final circuit testing.
