Panelboard installation playbook

Goal

Install a panelboard with compliant clearances, wiring space, terminations, and circuit identification.

Inputs you must know before you start

  • Panelboard type, rating, and listing information.
  • Service or feeder details and grounding scheme.
  • Available working space and wall construction.
  • Circuit schedule and labeling requirements.

The path (in order)

  1. Verify the panelboard location meets working space and access needs.
  2. Confirm the panelboard and accessories are listed for the application.
  3. Mount the enclosure with adequate wiring space and bending clearance.
  4. Establish grounding and bonding per the system type.
  5. Terminate conductors using correct connectors and torque values.
  6. Label all circuits and verify directory accuracy.
  7. Confirm covers, deadfronts, and clearances are intact and accessible.

This is

A practical checklist for installing a standard panelboard with inspection-ready documentation and labeling.

This is not

A complete service design or load calculation method for the building.

Inspection-ready checklist

  • Working space measured and documented.
  • Panelboard listing and instructions followed.
  • Wiring space and bend clearances verified.
  • Grounding and bonding path confirmed.
  • Terminations torqued and recorded.
  • Circuit directory filled out and accurate.

Worked example

A new lighting panel is installed in a utility room. The crew confirms working space, mounts the enclosure, bonds per the system type, terminates conductors with listed connectors, and labels each circuit for inspection.
