EV charger installation playbook
Goal
Install an EVSE circuit that matches equipment requirements and passes inspection.
Inputs you must know before you start
- EVSE nameplate requirements and installation instructions.
- Panel capacity and available breaker space.
- Installation location (garage, outdoors, parking area).
The path (in order)
- Confirm EVSE load and required breaker size.
- Select wiring method and conductor size for continuous load.
- Provide required disconnecting means or verify integral disconnect.
- Apply required GFCI protection based on location.
- Label the circuit and verify operation.
This is
A focused checklist for EV charger circuit compliance.
This is not
A service load calculation or demand management guide.
Inspection-ready checklist
- EVSE nameplate and breaker size match.
- Conductors sized for continuous load.
- Disconnecting means provided where required.
- GFCI protection applied where required.
- Circuit labeled at panel and equipment.
Worked example
A 48A EVSE specifies a 60A breaker. You size the conductors for a 60A circuit, install a listed EVSE disconnect where required, and apply GFCI if the location triggers it. The panel directory notes "EVSE Garage."
