Feeder tap checklist playbook

Goal

Verify a feeder tap meets length, protection, and conductor sizing rules.

Inputs you must know before you start

  • Tap length and routing.
  • Feeder OCPD rating and load.
  • Conductor size, insulation, and termination ratings.

The path (in order)

  1. Identify which tap rule applies to the installation.
  2. Verify tap length and physical protection requirements.
  3. Confirm conductor ampacity meets the tap rule and terminations.
  4. Verify overcurrent protection and equipment ratings.
  5. Document the tap rule used for inspection.

This is

A practical checklist for compliant feeder taps.

This is not

A design guide for full feeder sizing or service taps.

Inspection-ready checklist

  • Tap rule identified and documented.
  • Tap length and routing within allowed limits.
  • Conductor ampacity and terminations compliant.
  • Physical protection provided where required.
  • Panel labeling updated.

Worked example

A 10-foot tap feeds a small panel. The tap conductors meet the short tap conditions, are sized per termination limits, and are protected by the feeder OCPD. The tap rule is documented on the one-line.
